High-speed steel (HSS) is alloy tool steel used for machining at high speeds. High-speed steels have a special position among tool steels. They stand out in many respects: the highest content of carbide-forming alloy elements, ledeburitic structure upon casting and special thermal processing allowing for maximum use of the secondary hardness effect. We distinguish many types of high-speed steel tools: milling cutters, drills, threading dies, reamers, pull broaches, screw-taps, knife edge maintenance tools, dies, segments of circular saws or working ends of turning knives. Tool steel occurs in the monolithic or combined form.
